Stillman Academy

When many of our students first come to us, reading brings frustration. Parents often worry their children may never catch up. With multi-sensory, structured literacy instruction, they begin connecting sounds to letters, letters to syllables, syllables to words, and words to meaning. With careful guidance, they learn to read their favorite books aloud—proud, confident, and curious. With the Slingerland Approach, they also learn to write with confident spelling. Parents see not only progress, but a joyful learner with a future wide open.

Dyslexia affects one in five learners. Many other children experience delays in reading due to outdated teaching methodologies such as whole language and balanced literature (see “Sold a Story”).

Stillman Academy teaches using the Slingerland Approach - an Orton-Gillingham based method that was developed by Beth Slingerland in partnership with Anna Gillingham and Bessie Stillman - all pioneers in the field of teaching students with dyslexia and other language based learning difficulties.

We specialize in structured literacy instruction for KG through grade 12 students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other language-based learning differences. Our approach blends direct, systematic instruction with hands-on learning, field trips, and community-based exploration.
